Continuing the hot streak set by two effortlessly brilliant hip hop releases in 2018, the underground titan Freddie Gibbs has once again teamed up with instrumental hip-hop legend Madlib to deliver the first single their upcoming 'Bandana' album, the long awaited follow up to 2014's 'Pinata', a record that remains a high water mark of hip hop for the decade. The track, titled "Flat Tummy Tea", seems to be a tongue in cheek reference to the supplement brand that Gibbs had (maybe ironically) endorsed a day prior to its release via social media. Instrumentally, Madlib assembles a head bobbing, guitar driven beat for Gibbs to deliver high speed verses that, while never too self-serious, carry a socially conscious edge that tackles issues from the US prison system to corporate greed. In a press release issued around the same time as the single, the long awaited Bandana project was finally given a release date of April 2019, which is exceptional news, considering the album has been rumored to have been finished since 2016. Having delivered two albums to critical and commercial acclaim in 2018, the iron is hot for Freddie Gibbs, and we're confident that 'Bandana' will be the classic we've been anticipating.
